Details about dental crowns and our clinic
A dental crown is a sealed “cap” on a tooth that aids your existing tooth to provide the structure and strength for everyday use. Sometimes fillings cannot restore a tooth due to being an excess of decay or weakness in its structure, however the tooth does not need to be extracted. Restoring your existing tooth helps maintain your natural smile, bone health, and function – whereas an extraction may take all of this away.
Crowns can be placed on existing teeth, or implants and teeth that received root canal therapy. Dental crowns are needed when a tooth has more decay or complications than a filling can fix. You may need a crown if:
- You have a cavity that is too large for a filling to properly restore
- You have a tooth that is chipped, cracked, worn down, or weak
- You have had root canal treatment — the crown will protect the restored tooth
- You’re concerned with cosmetic appearance of a discolored or misaligned tooth
- You need to cover a tooth that has had a root canal or implant replacement
For a dental crown to be placed, the tooth needs to be shaped to properly house (fit) the crown, as well as remove the decayed portions of the tooth. The tooth may need to be built up with a special strengthening material if additional tooth structure is needed to support the crown.
This procedure feels just like a getting a filling or cleaning and our dentists will generously numb you so that your experience is comfortable and painless.

More information about dental crowns
Dental crowns are basically a cap that goes over an existing tooth. The idea is that it restores the tooth to its original size and strength while improving its appearance. Crowns are needed for a variety of reasons, including:
- To prevent a tooth from breaking because it's been compromised in some way
- To fix a tooth that is broken or worn down
- To reinforce a tooth with a large filling
- To support a dental bridge
- To cover teeth that look bad
- To cover a dental implant
- For cosmetic reasons
Crowns can be made from a variety of materials, but 3D printed crowns are the wave of the future. We are one of a few dental clinics in the United States using this state-of-the-art technology to create crowns while you wait. It's not only more affordable, but it also means at least one less trip to the dental clinic.
Dental crowns – the process in detail
Getting a crown isn't as difficult as you may think. Your dentist will first take some x-rays of the tooth to inspect the roots and bone. If the tooth is compromised in some way, it may be necessary to perform a root canal before the crown is put in place. Root canals are often needed when the pulp of the tooth is injured or the tooth is infected.
Your tooth will have to be shaped down and made smaller to accommodate the crown. The tooth is first anesthetized so that the procedure isn't painful. If a large portion of the tooth is missing, your dentist may not have to do much shaping, but they may have to use filling material to make it larger. Once your tooth is fully prepared, your dentist will will use a digital scanner to render a 3D digital impression of your tooth - not using any impression material to eliminate potential gagging and discomfort and maximize crown fit success.
The digital impression is then used to 3D print your new crown. Most dentists have to send the original impression, made with the gooey material that often causes discomfort, out and have it made, which can take weeks. We can create your crown on site while you wait.
Caring for your dental crown after the procedure
With great home care, your crown could last anywhere up to 15 years. The amount of wear that the crown receives will ultimately effect its lifespan. However, if you brush your teeth twice a day, floss once a day, and use an antiseptic mouthwash once a day, you will maximize the lifespan of your crown (and your existing teeth).
Does dental insurance cover crowns?
If you have dental insurance, it likely covers at least a portion of the cost of a new crown. We will provide you with a receipt so that you can file a claim with your insurance company for reimbursement. Not only are you paying affordable prices for quality dental care, but you're saving even more money by using your insurance.
Other benefits of urgent dental care from Dental Urgent Care
Countless people in the United States put off getting important dental care done because they simply can't afford the high costs of seeing a dentist. At most dental clinics, crowns cost well over $1,000, making them almost a luxury item. However, putting off dental treatment won't make the problem go away. In fact, it usually makes it worse. The longer you wait to get a crown, the more likely it is that you'll lose the tooth. A dental bridge will cost you more than a crown, so you want to get that crown taken care of as soon as you can.
This is also true if you have a crown that breaks. Fortunately, if this happens to you, we provide walk-in emergency dental care and 3D printed crowns while you wait. You don't have to wait weeks or months to get the problem taken care of, and it won't cost you an arm and leg.
Some of the other benefits of our emergency dental care include:
- No long wait times.
- Walk-in emergency dental care.
- State-of-the-art equipment.
- Pay with cash or credit card.
